The BEST Twitter Apps compiled by a Twitter Addict

Twitter Life Cycle - There would be a time when you made your twitter account, and never bothered using it. Then comes your old friend/idol in your life talking about the Awesomeness of Twitter. Passing the baton to you. You log in, try to figure out the a,b,c’s of Twitter. Then you follow as many pretty, beautiful, smart, cool people as you can. Then you try making stupid tweets, you figure out something called ‘mentions’. etc.. You start making friends, (you tend to make them friends as they are cool, often in touch etc. etc). Then you realize hey my follower count is too high, i must stop following idiots. You reduce the number of people you are following.

Now that’s an average journey of a person on Twitter. Now comes the way to stay online and tweeting this often, as Twitter is very ADDICTIVE.

These are the set of apps i have begun to dig up for twitter. I am naming them now, will update their ratings and rankings right after. I will begin to rank with order of importance, affordability (ease of use and flexibility to connect etc.).

First MOST useful Information/Tip – You can get all your DMs at your preferable time schedules via SMS from Twitter for FREE. All you need to verify your number. Then you can opt in to get twitter updates via twitter for free. you can also choose DMs. Its the best thing, because DMs are mostly the most important thing that you need on twitter and to keep record of. Below are rest of the apps.

1. SMS Tweet - www.SMStweet.in . This has been one of the best, cheapest, easiest ways to tweet and stay in touch. AWESOME. You need to send the tweets either to a Bangalore/Mumbai MOBILE number. So you are charged only local/national SMS rates as per your scheme. When you tweet, every successful (always has been successful for us – me and a few TwiBuddys (twitter buddys) of mine) Tweet would fetch you an SMS on your phone with your latest mentions. How Cool/Awesome/Crazy/Superb is that? My day does not end or begin without using SMStweet.

2. Dabr – m.Dabr.co.uk . This is again one of the best web pages for twitter. The best part here its very light and user friendly and one of the very very few apps where you can zoom in on the profile image of a person. Its second in order only because I used it before Tweete and that we can zoom in on Profile images. Along with Snaptu and m.tweete.net . You can see twitpic images along with the tweet. There are not many settings to tweak with when compared to Tweete.

3. Tweete - m.Tweete.net . This is almost the most – best mobile web page for Twitter ever. I can hit tweets longer than 140 characters. VERY very light. You can see not just Twitpic images but other Twitter images along with the tweet. Awesome, user-friendly, Touch sensitive. You have CRAZY amount of settings to play around with and make your twitter experience out of the world. The 2nd best along with Snaptu.

4. Snaptu – www.Snaptu.com – 2nd best along with Tweete. On snaptu you can actually use the app for Twitter and Facebook (individually not simultaneously though). Awesome interface. You can now even read small web pages within the app and see images in the app. etc.). You can see Twitpic images along with the Tweets.

5. TwiTalker - www.twi-talker.appspot.com – These are one of the most awesome, user friendly, AWESOME app. Its Super Innovation. Imagine being at the ease of Tweeting, seeing others tweets, your mentions and your DMs on Google chat. Wow! I was awestruck at this app. You can do anything and everything here. The best part is – you can go tweeting like a maniac, see tweets of everyone/only mentioned to you. No one would think you are tweeting. This is like an Secret alibi. :) Only drawback is that you don’t have character counts options on Gtalk/GoogleChat.

6. Tweetdeck – www.TweetDeck.com – I am sorry it had to be mentioned before. However it is by far the most -BEST app for your desktop (windows/mac). It is the no. 1 PC/Mac app! Imagine twitter running at the background. You still have the ease of doing your own work, tweeting about when free. Getting to know exactly when you have a mention. You can also search keywords and get notification as soon as there are any tweets with the words. You can also use Facebook from TweetDeck. Get all the status, wall updates, post to FB pages etc. You can post to WordPress, Tumblr, Facebook right from tweetdeck using WordPress&Tumblr compatible Twitter APIs. In fact Tweetdeck and Echofon are the only two apps to get Twitters RealTime API and that is huge.

7. Twitter Bar - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4664/ . Imagine being at the lease of tweeting from your status bar, with or without the current URL. Its by fatr the most important, helpful app ever. This is a Firefox add on. Works just AWESOME.

8. Kabutr (pigeon) – www.Kabutr.com . This is again one of the best Email Twitter apps for email. You can get twitter updates from all users, your mentions, etc. You can reply to the email to reply to the tweets/ forward the emails to Retweet the tweet. Amazing app. No one will ever know you have been tweeting whilst on email.

9. Yoono – https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1833/ . Use Gtalk, Yahoo messenger, MSN/Hotmail messenger, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube on a sidebar or a separate page. Its a very smart add on. At times how ever you would face some issues (I did, but when things are fixed, its the best). Because we are online on Firefox almost all through out the day. Thus the flexibility of being able to chat, tweet and FB while at it. Thes Best Innovations.

10. Echofon - www.Echofon.com . It again is an amzing app/add on for Firefox. Works great. Anyone would hardly know you have been tweeting all this while. I mean its smartly placed on the lower end. you have good number of options to fiddle with etc. Tweets, mentions, replies etc.

11. Mobile Twitter – m.Twitter.com . I do not like this web page much. Its rather boring and rigid. It looks good though. But having used such awesome apps before this one is a #fail.

12. Gechi - www.Gechi.in . Another SMS-able twitter app. You can tweet, get every tweet of a particular user, tweets of all the people you follow onto your mobile phone. But frankly i do not like this app much. Every time i send a tweet, i get an annoying confirmation from them saying tweet received.

13. I am not a Iphone, blackberry or Nokia user; but i hear UberTwitter is uber cool for Blackberry and Tweetie for Iphone. Gravity for Nokia. Twitter for Iphone and Twitter For BlackBerry.

14. Another awesome tweak and INNOVATION that i came up was, we always love being online and chatting even on the go (on the mobile). Thus download Ebuddy and use Twitalker to get all/selected updates on Gtalk! :)

Twitter followers’ analysis.

15. Tweepi - www.tweepi.com . They have got a set of tools on their webpage. These are web based. Very effective and helpful in unfollowing people who do not follow you back are inactive etc. These are three best tools of theirs -

  • Geeky Flush: Geeky Flush is a simple utility for quickly unfollowing tweeps that you follow but do not follow you back.
  • Geeky Reciprocate: This tool helps you find all the users that follow you, but you do not follow back, and enables you to follow them back with a click of a button.
  • Geeky Cleanup: You must have noticed that many of these users do not engage in conversations, never retweet anybody, or simply just ramble about nonsense stuff all day long (no links to useful content whatsoever!). You can use Tweepi’s geeky cleanup tool to filter these people out and unfollow them.

16. Manage Twitter Followers - www.manageflitter.com . One of the best websites to analyse and check all the people you are following. Clean up and manage who you follow. Find out who isn’t following you back. Find out which inactive accounts you follow.

17. Latest Qwitter – www.useqwitter.com . This is a website which will give you updates via Email with the username and ID of the people who unfollowed you on twitter. So you can bad mouth those unfollowers (just kidding).

Tweet backs ups/ downloads

18. Tweet Book – http://tweetbook.in/index.php . Get your tweets, favorites, mentions in PDF or your own tweetbook. Very very helpful to get a PDF instantly.

19. Tweet Backup - www.TweetBackUp.com . Its the best apps to backup all your tweets. The best part you can also back up your personal hastags of your choice. You can view the posts online, download them via various formats etc.

20. Backup my tweets - www.BackupMyTweets.net . One of the best apps to get all your tweets backed up to download in pdf, .csv etc.

21. Twitter Tools – http://crowdfavorite.com/wordpress/plugins/twitter-tools/ . I am trying to make this work. If it does, it would be the biggest break through. It looks amazing being able to archive each and every tweet of yours, mentions included. Thus one of my last apps/web tools.

Miscellaneous

22. Twit (IN)vite – www.twtvite.com – You can make, organize, Retweet events. You will be given a URL on Twitvite, with the even details. Enabling you to tweet the URL and give access to Meet up / Tweet up details more than 140 characters. Very helpful. People can log in with Twitter and accept/decline to attend a meeting.

This is the life of a Twitter – ville user. Hope you all like all these apps and the post.

Paryushana

Copied from Wiki!

Paryushana (or Paryusan) is one of the two most important festivals for the Jains, the other being Diwali. Normally Svetambara Jains refer it as Paryushana, while Digambara Jains refer it as Dasa Laksana. Paryushan means, literally, “abiding” or “coming together”. It is also a time when the laity take on vows of study and fasting with a spiritual intensity similar to temporary monasticism. [1][2] The duration of Paryusana is either eight or ten days (depending on the sect) and comes at the time when the wandering monks take up temporary residence for four months of monsoon. In popular terminology, this stay is termed chaturmasa because the rainy season is regarded to be about four months. For this minimum duration, Paryushana must be initiated by panchami (fifth day) of the shukla phase of the Bhadrapada month. In the scriptures it is described that Lord Mahavira used to start Paryushana on Bhadrapada paksha panchami. After Mahavir, nearly 150 years Jain Samvatsari was shifted to Chaturthi (4th day of Bhadrapada of Shukla phase. Since 2200 years Jains follows Chaturthi.

The date for the Paryushana festival is thus Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi for both major sects. Because of computational and other differences, there can be some minor differences among various subsects. Recently there has been an attempt to standardize the date. Because at this time the monks have settled in the town for a longer duration, it is time for the householders to have an annual renewal of the faith by listening to the statement of the Dharma and by meditation and vratas (self-control). In the Digambaras, it is done by starting a 10-day period from Paryushana (Bhadrapada Shukla panchami) during which the dashalakshana vrata is undertaken. In the Shvetambaras an 8-day festival is celebrated that ends with Bhadrapada Shukla chaturthi. The last day is called Samvatsari, short for Samvatsari Pratikramana.

During the 8-day festival, the Kalpa Sutra is recited in the Swetmbara sect, that includes a recitation of the section on birth of Lord Mahavira on the fifth day.[2] In the Digambara sect the Tatvartha-sutra of Umaswati is recited. On the dashami, the sugandha-dashami vrata occurs. The Digambaras celebrate Ananta-chaturdashi on the chaturdashi, special worship is done on this day. Many towns have a procession leading to the main temple.

The original Prakrit (ardhamagadhi) term for Paryushana is “Pajjo-savana”. In case of Jain terms, the Prakrit forms of the words are the original.

[edit] Observances

[edit] Fasting

Most of the Jains observe fast and soak themselves in the rituals associated with the event and try to ready themselves for a virtuous life. The span of the fast could be anything between a day and 30 days or even more. Those observing a fast survive on boiled water, which could be consumed only between sunrise and sunset.[3]

[edit] Pratikramana (Samayika): Renewal meditation

On all the eight days, Jains begin their day with ‘pratikraman’ at 5.45 in the morning, followed by pujas for promoting universal peace and brotherhood.[3] Pratikramana means turning back. It is a form of meditation, called Samayika where one reflects on his spiritual journey and renews his faith. For both Swetambaras and Digambaras, it takes the form of periodic meditation. The period can be twice daily (morning and evening), once every lunar phase, every four months, or every year. The annual Pratikramana in some form is the minimum for a Sravaka.

The annual Pratikramana is Samvatsari Pratikramana, in short Samvatsari. Since it coincides with Paryushana, the terms “Samvatsari” and “Paryushana” are sometimes used interchangeably.

Pratikramana includes six avasyakas or essentials:

  • samayika: to stay in equanimity by withdrawing to the self.
  • Chauvisantho or Prayers to the Five Supremes, 24 Jinas and the 4 mangalas, including the Dharma as presented by the ancient Masters.|
  • Vandana or Prayer to the Master(Guru) or the Deity.
  • Pratikramana or reflections on vratas and past transgressions.
  • Kayotsarga: detachment from the body by controlling it.
  • Pratyakhyan: making resolutions or vows.

The detailed recommended procedure can be found in the handbooks. Detailed Pratikramana takes about 3 hours, however all essentials can be done in a much shorter time if needed.

Pratikramana is also sometimes termed Samayika in the Digambara tradition.

By tradition certain postures are recommended for Pratikramana.

[edit] Requesting Forgiveness

At the conclusion of the festival, the Sravakas request each other for forgiveness for all offenses committed during the last year.[3] This occurs on the Paryusha day for the Swetambara and on Pratipada (first) of Ashwin Krashna for the Digambara. Forgiveness is asked by telling “Micchami Dukkadam” to each other. It means “If I have caused you offence in any way, knowingly or unknowingly, in thought word or deed, then I seek your forgiveness”.[4]

[edit] Dasha-Lakshana Vrata

This is a vrata that celebrates 10 components of the dharma: Noble kshama (forbearance), mardava (gentleness), arjava (uprightness), shaucha (purity), satya (truth), sanyam (restraint), tapas (austerity), tyaga (renunciation), akinchanya (lack of possession) and brahmcharya (chastity), as described by Umaswati.

In the full form, it is a 10 day vrata that spans 10 years. It may be undertaken during Shukla Panchami to Chaturdashi of Bhadrapada, Magh or Chaitra. However it is common to do it during Bhadrapada, in which case it starts with Paryushana.
